In December, we invited teens to take on the role of critic and submit an original review of any form of creative expression to The New York Times for our sixth annual Student Review Contest. We received more than 4,100 entries—almost twice as many as last year—and our judges selected 11 winners, 17 runners-up and 28 honorable mentions.

Our finalists critiqued everything from “Bridgerton” to “The Mandalorian.” Rachmaninoff on a new hyperpop album; “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” for Mary Oliver’s collection of poems; a pho restaurant for a cooking class; An indispensable set of headphones for Zoom; and much more.

You can read the 11 winning submissions below. All of these reviews are a joy to read and have a few other things in common: they express strong opinions and back them up with interesting and relevant details. They provide the reader with the background of the work and put it into context. And they stand out for their creative use of language, style and tone.

Puberty, a time marked, quite literally, by sweat stains and body hair, is a period most of us don’t like to remember. Except for the creators of “Big Mouth.” The four-season Netflix animated thriller centers on teenage boys Nick and Andrew and their coming-of-age escapades in an American suburb. It’s nothing short of a loud, colorful love letter to our most gangly, acne-ridden years.

The authors’ vivid recollection of puberty without rose-colored glasses hits home for many teenagers like me. When the show’s lead, Jessie, uses a tampon for the first time, we’re treated to a drop of blood on spotless white underwear. Instead, the episode is the central plotline in an episode whose title speaks for itself: “The Greatest Era Ever.” If these milestones of change aren’t clear enough, each character is given a “hormone monster” — an embodiment of the vilest, uncivilized, and downright disgusting thoughts of many teenagers.

However, don’t let the mature swim face fool you. While the characters make outrageous jokes, the writers of “Big Mouth” don’t fall into the pitfalls of the diminutive “dark humor” of “South Park” and “Family Guy” fame. Instead, the show uses its popularity among teenagers to tackle serious issues like depression, sexual identity and consent. It even sends positive messages that can’t be easily dismissed with a flick of the finger at the “barf” or “cringe” emojis.
The show’s ability to portray the vicissitudes of puberty with admirable accuracy and minimal self-consciousness allows it to play the “cool counselor” role. That is, an adult who understands the adolescent perspective with sometimes kaleidoscope animation and sometimes silent film simplicity. This authenticity not only makes the show relevant, but gives it credibility.
Whether it’s depictions of the benefits of therapy and meditation or tips on how to navigate childhood friendships and first romances, the teen audience is actually tuned in to see and hear it.
And yes, it seems silly to pay more attention to Zen in an animated show than academic professionals. But teenagers are more willing to listen to “Big Mouths” because it’s more like getting a pep talk from a slightly older friend than a lecture from a tired teacher bound by state guidelines.
Although it may have been seen by “Bridgerton” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Big Mouths'” foul language, dirty humor and friendly advice provide the ideal respite for any Zoom-worried teenager.

To market Disney+ in mainland China, director Niki Caro struggled to bring maturity to the cheeky original. Gone are the shirtless Li Shang scenes, Mishu’s witty, infectiously upbeat songs; In their place, wuxia themes and sweeping scenes.
