They make up fake names like “National Sweepstakes Bureau” or pretend to be from a real agency like the Federal Trade Commission. The truth is that the government will not call you to ask for money so that you can get a reward.
• Scammers use names of organizations you may recognize. Fraudsters may pretend to be from reputable companies that run real sweepstakes. But no real sweepstakes company will contact you to ask for money so that you can claim the prize. If you are not sure, contact the actual company directly to find out the truth. And see the contact information of the actual company itself. Do not rely on the person who contacts you to give you real contact information.
• Scammers send you a message (via text, email, or social media) to get your personal information. You may be told you’ve won a gift card or a local store discount code. Or the message might say you’ve won something expensive like an iPad or a new car at your local dealership. Scammers hope that you will respond with your personal information or click on links that may take your personal information or download malware to your device. Do not answer.
• Scammers make it look like you’re the only person who won a prize. But the same text, email, or letter went to many people. If your message came by mail, check the postmark on the envelope or postcard. If your “notice” was sent at a bulk rate, it means that many other people received the same notice. For other types of messages, check online to see if others are reporting that they received the same message.
• Scammers say you’ve won a foreign lottery, or that you can buy a ticket for one. Messages about foreign lotteries almost certainly come from a scammer — and it’s a bad idea to respond. First, it is illegal for US citizens to play foreign lotteries, so don’t trust anyone who tells you to break the law. Second, if you buy a foreign lottery ticket, expect many more offers for fake lotteries or fraudulent investment “opportunities.” Finally, there is no secret system to winning the foreign lottery, so don’t believe anyone who tells you they can help you win.
• Scammers pressure you to take action now to claim a reward. Scammers want you to hurry up and pay or give them information. They tell you that it’s a limited time offer or that you have to “act now” to claim your prize. They don’t want you to have time to figure out what’s really going on. Don’t rush – especially if they want you to do something to get your reward.
• Scammers send you a check and ask you to send some money back. This is a fake check scam. If you deposit a check, it can take weeks for the bank to figure out that it’s fake. Meanwhile, the bank has to make the funds available, so it looks like the money is in your account. But once the bank realizes that the check is fake, they will want you to return the funds.
